Nuclear is now on the record: 82 GW listed, 18.6 GW running
This week the catalogue took in the Global Energy Monitor nuclear tracker (August 2026 edition, CC BY 4.0), unit by unit. That adds a technology the catalogue did not cover and 103 records across twelve countries in the Gulf, South Asia and South East Asia, plus Egypt and Iran, which arrive with the tracker and are kept for completeness.
The headline numbers, counted from the published records:
- 103 records, 82.0 GW of nuclear capacity on the record
- 33 units operating, 18.6 GW (23% of the listed capacity)
- 12 units under construction, 15.0 GW
- 58 records, 48.4 GW at concept or development stage
For scale: the whole asset catalogue is 9,560 records and 1,530 GW, so nuclear is 5.4% of listed capacity in this region.

The Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Iran hold the remaining 3.1 GW.
Three things the table says on its own
The UAE is the only country in the region whose nuclear list is entirely built. Barakah's four units, 1,417 MW each, are all operating and there is nothing else on the UAE list. Every other country's nuclear figure is mostly pipeline.
India carries 57% of the region's listed nuclear capacity, and 68% of India's own figure is at concept stage. 8.4 GW is running, 6.6 GW is under construction (Kudankulam units 3 to 6 among them, 1,000 MW each), and 32.1 GW sits at concept or development. The largest single block in that pipeline is Jaitapur: six units of 1,730 MW, all at concept, all listed to Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
The construction column is short and concentrated. Twelve units in the whole region: El Dabaa in Egypt (4.8 GW, the largest single record), Rooppur 1 and 2 in Bangladesh (2.4 GW), Chashma 5 in Pakistan (1.2 GW), and eight units in India: Kudankulam 3 to 6, Kaiga 5 and 6, Rajasthan 8 and the Kalpakkam fast breeder. Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand have 16.0 GW listed between them and none of it under construction.
What we did not do
We did not merge units into plants. A plant on this record is its units, each with its own stage, because a plant with two running units and four planned ones is not "operating" and is not "planned". Where the source gives a whole plant with no unit split, as with El Dabaa, it is one record.
We did not grade any of it. Concept stage means a public source names the project and a capacity; nothing more. The catalogue counts what is published and links the page it was published on.
